We have entered the Lipman Family Farms 2018 Garden Challenge
Pictures coming soon!
Gardening is FUN!
With today's kids being at least 2 generations away from the farm it is hard for them to understand what goes into the growing and processing of their food and fiber. What better way to teach the kids this information than to have them grow, process and market various products.
A gardening project began with a small conventional garden, which later became square foot gardening, and has evolved into trying many different types of gardening techniques. We have used Earth Boxes, planted directly into a bag of soil, built rain gutter planters, utilized container gardens, raised bed gardens and even made hydroponic towers. Many of these were very successful. Using the scientific method, the students learned why some techniques work and others do not.
In addition, 2 peach trees and 25 blueberry bushes were donated to the program. Maintaining these has become a regular chore for the students to take care of. They get very excited after the harvest and even made blueberry muffins to eat!

2015-16 Gardening Begins
Our Potato Party
We planted potatoes in our earth boxes. Some with soil and some with sawdust to see which would grow better. (We learned that it is hard to keep the sawdust moist enough, but the potatoes did grow.) Because we like instant gratification, we decided to have a "Potato Party" and prepare several potato dishes to share with lots of special people. Everyone helped with washing potatoes, dicing, chopping and mashing. We made twice baked potatoes, potato skins, red potato salad, potato soup, french fries, parsley purple potatoes, scalloped potatoes (made by our culinary department) and even had a couple varieties of potato chips.
We made special invitations and asked the administration and our teachers to attend our party. They all enjoyed trying the different varieties of potato dishes.

We finally got a few peaches off of our peach trees that we planted last year. Everyone got to pick one, wash it and eat it. They were very sweet.
